What Happens When You Outsource One Subject (And Stop Trying to Do It All)

Homeschool parents and afterschool support families alike know the pressure of trying to cover everything. Math, science, writing, reading, foreign language, character development—it’s enough to make your head spin. But what if there was another way?

We see it all the time at Curio: the moment a family chooses to outsource just one subject—like writing or ELA—their whole homeschool rhythm changes for the better. Kids get what they need, and parents get to stop white-knuckling their way through subjects they never felt equipped to teach in the first place.

Let me tell you about one of our CurioWrite families. For privacy, we’ll call the students Big Brother and Little Brother.

A Breakthrough for Big Brother

Big Brother didn’t thrive in traditional school settings. Sitting still, staying on task, reading award-winning novels—none of it clicked. But when he joined Curio’s full-year ELA class, something changed. We started with solid foundations—literary analysis, grammar, reading strategies—but then we noticed what really lit him up: copywriting, marketing strategy, financial literacy.

So we adapted.

We built those interests into his reading and writing work. Suddenly, he wasn’t just showing up—he was engaged. Curious. Even excited to share his ideas. Watching a student light up like that, just because the topic finally mattered to him? That’s why we do what we do.

At Curio, we’re able to make these pivots because we stay in close contact with families. We read your feedback. We listen. And then we adjust—without lowering our standards for excellence.

Steady Progress for Little Brother

Little Brother’s challenges looked different. He had reading gaps that made grade-level texts feel impossible, and there was suspicion of dyslexia. He could decode, but it was slow and frustrating. His confidence was shaken.

We adjusted again.

We rewrote assignments to meet him where he was, while still holding high expectations for quality thinking, listening, and writing. And as he practiced, he grew. He started to read with more ease. He began turning in full, thoughtful assignments. He took pride in his work. The progress wasn’t instant, but it was real—and the joy of celebrating those wins together is something we’ll never forget.

The Truth: You Don’t Have to Do It All

What both of these stories show is that outsourcing one subject well can make all the difference—for parents and kids alike.

Whether it’s our full ELA program like CurioWrite or a supplemental offering like our Curio Newbery Book Club, we partner with families to fill gaps, fuel passions, and keep the learning personal and powerful.

One family, for example, uses our book club even though their daughter is already enrolled in a solid school-based ELA class. Why? Because she’s ready for more. She’s hungry for deeper conversations and stronger writing prompts than what’s offered in the traditional classroom. And at Curio, she gets just that.

So, What’s Next?

Maybe it’s time to stop carrying the full load. Let go of the guilt. Hand off one subject to someone you trust. When you choose a program that listens, adapts, and celebrates growth, you’ll be amazed at what your child can do—and how much lighter you’ll feel.
