What We Read in September: A Homeschool Family Book Wrap-up

September was a fantastic month for stories in our homeschool! As the weather starts to cool down, we find ourselves reaching for books more and more. Between new school assignments, independent reading choices, and our own towering to-be-read piles, our bookshelves (and Libby shelf) were very busy.

We believe that reading builds more than just vocabulary; it builds curiosity, empathy, and conversation. Sharing our monthly book lists has become one of our favorite ways to connect with you all and hopefully spark some ideas for your own family’s reading list.

A quick tip before we dive in: we are huge fans of the  Libby App for borrowing ebooks and audiobooks from the library. Audiobooks are especially fantastic for kids when paired with the physical book, and they're the secret to how I get so much reading done myself—nothing powers a good house-cleaning session like a captivating story!
Here’s a look at what each of us read in September.

📚 The 6-Year-Old
This age is all about building confidence and having fun with familiar characters. This month was a mix of classic, silly adventures and sweet, faith-based stories.
Pete the Cat: Pete's Big Lunch by James Dean
Bugs: Hide and Seek by Laura Buller
Dirt on My Shirt by Jeff Foxworthy
Amelia Bedelia is for the Birds by Herman Parish
With Jesus I Am Series by Good News Meditations Kids

📚 The 8-Year-Old
Our 8-year-old’s reading list this month was packed with fantasy, adventure, and of course, a graphic novel from a favorite author.
Beyond the Deepwoods by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell
The Boneshaker by Kate Milford
The Good News Must Go Out by Rebecca Davis
Cat Kid Comic Club by Dav Pilkey
The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

📚 The 10-Year-Old
This month, our 10-year-old was captivated by an award-winning story that sparked some incredible conversations. It's a book that both she and her older sister ended up reading!
The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera
Alebrijes by Donna Barba Higuera

📚 The 12-Year-Old
Our oldest reader continued her dive into mythology-inspired adventures and also read the same gripping sci-fi novel as her sister.
The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan
The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera
A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus

📚 For Mom: Historical Fiction and Big Ideas
My own stack was filled with historical fiction and a book on philosophy that I've been meaning to read for ages.
The Queens of Crime by Marie Benedict
A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus
Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder
When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill

What About Your Family? 📖

That’s a wrap on our September reading! One of my favorite parts of homeschooling is watching each child’s taste in books grow and evolve month by month.
